Jerry Manut Gibbs (I’m half Thai… hence the Manut)
2. College and Hometown and Profession?
University of Florida for both college and medical school… I bleed orange and blue… GO GATORS!
Vascular Interventional Radiologist for Houston Radiology Associated (I cover nearly the entire Houston Methodist Hospital network)
3. How did you find out about AllSport?
I’ve known Susie and David from before they opened Allsport (if you don’t already know this, they are a “fun” couple to party with). When they opened up Allsport, I came and tried it out and really liked the programming and new people I met. At the time, I was a member of another great CrossFit box in Houston but would still “drop in” to Allsport. Eventually I decided to move over to Allsport full-time since it was much more convenient with my work schedule.
4. Favorite thing about CrossFit?
Wow… tough question. Besides the obvious physical benefits of CrossFit (I’m 37-years-old and in the best shape of my life), I would have to say the community and friendships CrossFit provides is by far my favorite thing. I have made such great friends through CrossFit. And these are friends that come from all different backgrounds and have different professions. We push each other every day during a tough WOD. It’s definitely the best motivation!
5. Favorite WOD/Least Favorite WOD or Movement?
I really like WODs that incorporate some form of upper body strength so one of favorite WODs is Diane (21-15-9 of 275# Deadlifts and HSPUs). I also like Jackie (1000m row, 50 #45 thrusters, and 30 pull-ups) because I like pull-ups and am pretty efficient at thrusters (even though I really hate, hate, hate rowing).
I really also hate sumo dead lift high pulls… and carrying anything heavy over long distances (farmers’ carries/sandbag carries). Finally, I have recently been having more of a hate (rather than love-hate) relationship with Fran (21-15-9 of 95# thrusters and pull-ups). Even though this WOD has movements I like, the intensity of the WOD destroys me for days!
6. WOD Nemesis, who do you battle or measure yourself against consistently?
I typically WOD in the first class of the day so I don’t have anyone to compare myself to. But I would be lying if I said I didn’t have a WOD Nemesis. There are a few people I like to compare myself to. Without naming names, some used to WOD with us before this MISFITs thing happened. Of the ones that don’t do the MISFITS programming, there is one particular person I like to compare myself to who was once known as “The Abs.” He has been consistently beating me these days. That really burns…Because I’m 37-years-old, I also like to compete with some of the younger guys in the box too. Nothing makes an old guy feel better than beating a 22-year-old Clark O’Bannon in a WOD!
7. Married how long, kids?, Dating or Single?
Loaded question? How is this pertinent? Answer: Single
8. Cats or Dogs?
DOGS! I adopted my yellow lab, Sandy, from the Houston Humane Society four and a half years ago. She is the sweetest thing in my life.
9. How long have you been at AllSport?
I have been a “full-time” member for about a year and 3 months. However, I’ve been coming here for more than 2 years.
10. What gains have been most impressive to you, weight loss, strength gain etc?
I’ve always been “fit,” but CrossFit really had improved my “core” strength. As part of my job I have to wear a lead suit when I perform cases on my patients. Before I started CrossFit, I would have chronic back/hip pain from the wearing the weight of the lead suit all day. However, that pain is now gone (but occasionally replaced by the soreness we have all experienced from a challenging WOD).
11. If you were stranded on a desert island and could take only one piece of equipment, what would it be?
12. Strict Zone/Paleo or Mexican and Margaritas Kind of Paleo?
Definitely a Mexican and margaritas kind of diet. I tried Paleo for a while but I love too many things that are forbidden. So I now just try to eat healthy and practice portion control when I don’t. I’m not ashamed to say that I love a good old strawberry margarita from El Tiempos.
13. How long did it take to get your first Pull-up or Muscle Up?
I have always been able to do pull-ups. I got my first muscle-up after about 6 months.
14. Class time you regularly attend? Why?
Early morning 5:15AM! I never know when my day at work will end, so I have to go to the early class to get a WOD in. I do try to hit up the 6PM class every once in while to catch up with my friends that go in the evening.
15. What movement(s) are you best at? Why?
I’ve been told I have a very efficient thruster. I think it’s because I’m so “compact.” I’m not that heavy, and my upper body is pretty strong… those in combination with my short T-rex arms makes me good at push-ups and HSPUs. I can handstand walk pretty well too.
16. What movement(s) are you worst at? What are you doing to get better at them?
I tend to pull early on my snatch/clean and muscle them up rather than use my hips. Lately I’ve been working on them at another gym by doing a clean/snatch progression in front of a mirror to make sure I don’t pull too early and that I really open up my hips. I’m hoping this will help. I’ve also been practicing the butterfly pull-up a lot recently.
17. Beach and Sand or Snow and Skis?
Duh… I’m a Florida boy… Beach and Sand!
18. Three times a week or Unlimited?
19. CrossFit has helped me be a better _____________? You fill in the blank (ex. Dad, Softball Player, Husband, Nurse etc…)
Physician! Nothing relieves stress better than tackling a difficult WOD. I find the only time I don’t think about work is during my CrossFit class (because during that time all I think about is the techniques in a particular lift or movement, how I can push myself harder during a WOD, or how I’m going to keep myself from vomiting). Having balance is very important in life and CrossFit has given me a such great outlet to relieve my daily stress. I also find after working out in the morning, that I am more focused and perform better during the day.
