L: Colorado School of Mines; Greeley, Colorado (>Texas); Professional student (PhD candidate at Rice in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering)

I spend most of my time cheering on my wife as she crushes CrossFit workouts and creates sweet experiments in the lab. But in my spare time I work as an engineer at Baker Hughes and study as a PhD student at Rice.

3. How did you find out about AllSport?
L: When knew that Hilary M had been doing CrossFit for a while, and when we decided that we needed something that would keep us active she recommended AllSport to us!

T: I found out about AllSport from my wife who found out about it from another awesome Mines alum – Hilary M (Go Orediggers!)

4. Favorite thing about CrossFit?
L: I love the intensity and competitive nature of the WODs, but also that, at the same time, everyone is willing to help you improve. Plus, it’s always fun to find new people to eat fajitas with.

T: Besides watching my wife do muscle-ups? Working to my physical limits, and almost throwing up after every workout…except for that one time when “almost” became reality…thanks airbike.

5. Favorite WOD/Least Favorite WOD or Movement?
L: Favorite: Anything involving many movements where I can’t think about what I’m doing (and whether it hurts or not) for too long (i.e. Tabata or Fight Gone Bad) Least Favorite: Really heavy barbell WODs. Or WODs with really heavy deadlifts. Or barbell WODS.

T: Favorite: Too many favorites…anything that involves skill, running, or overhead squats. If I had to choose I would say Murph – I’m a big fan of those long super intense hero WODs. Least favorite: Wallballs

6. WOD Nemesis, who do you battle or measure yourself against consistently?
L: I always check what morning Lauren (Lauren K) does (Go Laurens!!). Or Kristy if we’re WOD-ing together.

T: What’s the plural of nemesis? Nemesisen? Nemesi? I would say Clark O’ but he’s more machine than he is human. I try to keep up with Hernan and Scott S. And all my homies in the 6PM class!

7. Married how long, kids?, Dating or Single?
L: Married for almost 3 years (and still loving it)! (No kids)

8. Cats or Dogs?
L: Both! (But currently neither because Tim won’t let me have pets in our apartment)

T:  True statement ^  I’m all for dogs, but Lauren likes cats, so I have become more accepting.

9. How long have you been at AllSport?
L: We started at AllSport in the fall of 2013, but I took a 6 month hiatus to get a new ACL put in.

T: (See above)

10. What gains have been most impressive to you, weight loss, strength gain etc?
L: I think technique gains. I’m not expecting to get back to my prime college strength days, but I’ve been really impressed by my improvements in pull ups and dips and improvements in my lifting technique.

T: Skills (i.e. double-unders, muscle-ups, kipping pull-ups, etc) and olympic lifting form

11. If you were stranded on a desert island and could take only one piece of equipment, what would it be?
L: A barbell, even though I just said I didn’t like barbell WODs… it just seems the most multi-functional
T: Barbell

12. Strict Zone/Paleo or Mexican and Margaritas Kind of Paleo?
L: Mostly clean eating.
T: I eat whatever my lovely wife prepares

13. How long did it take to get your first Pull-up or Muscle Up?
L: Maybe a couple months to get completely off the bands for pull-ups. Just got muscle ups for my birthday 4/7/15!!

T: First try. I’m pretty light so my body practically lifts itself

14. Class time you regularly attend? Why?
L: Usually 5 or 6pm, because I like to come straight from the lab at Rice. I can’t do the 7pm, because all I will think about is how hungry I am.
T: 6PM. Best class. But 5PM and 7PM are good too.
15. What movement(s) are you best at? Why?
L: Bench press, I guess?! I have no idea why…
T: Bodyweight/Skill movements, running, and overhead squats. I have good body control, and shoulder flexibility.

16. What movement(s) are you worst at? What are you doing to get better at them?
L: OHS or anything that requires the bar going over my head. I’ve been trying really hard to work on my shoulder mobility. I also could use some more double under practice…

T: Heavy deadlift, high-rep heavy bar movements. First I’ll probably work on my bicep curls so I can get huge biceps, then I’ll work on leg strength. Extra squat and DL!

17. Beach and Sand or Snow and Skis?
L: Snow and skis!

T: Beach and sand. But Lauren will be in the snow, so I’ll go there.

18. Three times a week or Unlimited?

19. CrossFit has helped me be a better _____________? You fill in the blank (ex. Dad, Softball Player, Husband, Nurse etc…)
L: I think that CrossFit has made me a better person in a variety of ways. I believe that it’s always good to challenge yourself and to push yourself past your comfort zone, and CrossFit definitely does that. Working out at high intensity also encourages me to eat more healthily and helps me to sleep better, which allows me to be more attentive and creative in the lab.

T: Capable human being. CrossFit is all about functional movement, so the skills, strength, and conditioning carry over to every aspect of life.

20. If I could write the WOD on the board? What would it be? (You write the Strength and WOD)

Strength: Bench press, 5×3
400m run
20 sit ups
10 box jumps
5 thrusters
3 burpees

Strength: Snatch 1X5, 2X3, 3X2, increasing each weight each grouping
